FEEDING CHART FOR SHEEP
Optimize livestock nutrition with a tailored approach, incorporating Weideman’s guidance, ensuring ewes, lambs, and rams receive the right feed at crucial stages for robust health and production.
| Type of Animal | Important Stages | Nutrition |
|---|---|---|

| Lambs | From weaning until reaching sufficient weight. | Lamb finishing pills. |
| Rams | 2 months before the breeding season (sperm production takes about 2 months). | Ram, lamb, and ewe pills during the production period. |
| Rams | 3 weeks before pairing to 3 weeks after pairing. | If grazing is limited: Ram, lamb, and ewe pills. |
| Rams | 6 weeks before and after lambing during the production lick. | If grazing is limited: Ram, lamb, and ewe pills. |

Why we recommend finishing
- To get lambs market-ready during times of pasture scarcity.
- To accelerate capital turnover by marketing lambs more quickly.
- To prevent veld deterioration and overgrazing in dry times, reducing livestock load and allowing for faster pasture recovery after rainfall.
- To conserve pasture and consequently reduce supplementary feeding if the same number of breeding ewes are maintained.
- To wean lambs earlier so that ewes can be bred sooner, especially in systems where ewes lamb every eight months. Early weaning helps ewes regain their mass sooner. For every 1 kg heavier the ewe is at mating, the lambing percentage increases by approximately 1.5 to 2.5%.
- To increase income as it enables vertical expansion of sheep farming.
WHEN?
- When a lamb reaches a weight of 28kg – 32kg.
- Any animal that needs to be prepared for the slaughter market.
HOW MUCH?
Adjust animals with Lusern pills for the first 14 days (if the lamb was not on creep feed), then gradually transition to a finishing ration to give animals sufficient time for adjustment.
- Feed at least twice a day, but can be fed up to 5 times a day.
- Feed ad lib, troughs should never be completely empty, but the feed should also not become old. Old feed = poor quality = slow growth. It’s the feedlot manager’s eyes that fatten the animals!
Warning: This feed contains NPN sources, feed strictly according to instructions.
